Stay: Hotel Lindrum in Melbourne

Coming back to Melbourne now means dividing our time between my husband’s parent’s house and my parent’s house. While it’s always lovely to catch up with family, it’s still nice to be able to sneak out to stay at a hotel and relish in having your own space. The Hotel Lindrum offered a home away from home—if only for one night.

Checking in to the Hotel Lindrum

The Lindrum is a boutique hotel located at the very top of Flinders Street, near Spring Street, and only a few blocks away from Federation Square. It  has the benefit of a superior location without all of the foot traffic, although buzzing restaurants and bars are only a stone’s throw away. I love a hotel with charm and a unique back story, which is why I tend to gravitate towards boutique hotels, and the Lindrum certainly has character in spades.

The Hotel Lindrum building has been around for a little while, albeit in different reincarnations. It was used as a store and sales room for the Griffiths Brothers Tea Merchants in the 1900s before it was turned into a newspaper headquarters in the 1960s. However, its most famous iteration was during the period between 1973 and 1988 when the building became a popular billiard-playing establishment known as Lindrum’s Billiard Centre. It was run by the niece of Walter Lindrum, one of the most successful billiards players in the history of the game.

As soon as you enter the hotel, you can feel the history of the building and you get the sense that the Lindrum has endeavoured to hold on to the genteel sophistication of yesteryear with its dark wooden panelling and art deco styling. The Lindrum pays homage to its fascinating past with a billiard room that houses an original billiard table from its time as Lindrum’s Billiard Centre. The refined Felt Restaurant, on the ground floor, also offers High Tea on the weekend.

The rooms

All of the rooms at the Hotel Lindrum have recently undergone a refurbishment. We stayed in the modest Studio Room, which was simple and elegant, the muted colour palette of the room furniture contrasted nicely with the bright pop of colour from the red armchairs. I enjoyed the subtle stylish touches throughout; in particularly, the art deco pattern on the cushions, which felt very Great Gatsby-esque.

Nearby the Hotel Lindrum

One of the best things about the Hotel Lindrum is its location and there are plenty of  bars and eateries nearby that are worth a visit. Here are a few of my favourites.

  • Hihou, 1 Flinders Lane:  An intimate Japanese bar lounge.
  • Chin Chin, 125 Flinders Lane: Have a drink at the downstairs Go Go Bar while you wait 2 hours for a table.
  • Cumulus, 45 Flinders Lane: The place to enjoy Andrew McConnell’s food in a fancy setting; otherwise try Supernormal down the road (180 Flinders Lane) which is a tad more low-key.
  • Fonda Flinders Lane: 31 Flinders Lane: Fancy some Mexican food? At Fonda, mi casa es su casa.

Disclosure: Curated by Cammi visited the Hotel Lindrum as a guest; however, as always, all opinions are my own.
